Breakfast is my favourite meal so I never understand how some people go without. However, Ayurveda is clear that if you are not hungry, you shouldn’t eat. Wait until you are hungry, then have something light so that you can still eat your lunch at the proper time.

Vata is kept in balance with warm, cooked food like porridge, eggs or fresh pancakes. Avoid dry cereal, or soften it in room-temperature milk. Instead of coffee, try any milky, spiced masala tea.

Pitta should opt for cooling food, such as muesli, granola, cereal or toast. Avoid salty, fatty breakfasts such as sausages (heating and heavy) as they increase pitta. Stick to egg whites as the yolks are heating. Avoid coffee, tea, orange juice and yoghurt – try a grain milk or fennel and mint tea.

Kapha should only eat if hungry as many are not peckish in the morning. Choose warm, light foods like spiced fruit compote. Fruit is best eaten by itself in the morning as it increases immunity and vitality. Warm stewed apples are one of the healthiest ways to start the day for all body types.
