It was the Great Depression, more than any other factor, that ushered in repeal. The US Government simply could not survive without the tax revenue from liquor sales.

When prohibition was repealed, President Roosevelt said, ‘What America needs now is a drink.’

He celebrated with a Dirty martini, which from historical accounts he mixed as follows:

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
a piece lemon peel
60ml dry gin
30ml dry vermouth
1 teaspoon olive brine
2 brined olives, to garnish

Method

  1. First rub the lemon peel around the rim of a cocktail glass, then discard the peel. Put the rest of ingredients into a shaker, add plenty of cubed ice and shake until the shaker is very frosty. Fine-strain into the prepared glass and add the garnish.
