These are perfect when you’re desperate for something sweet, rich and chocolatey – but they’re as healthy as they possibly can be. Dark chocolate eaten in moderation can be very good for you. This doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a treat. It’s just a treat made good!

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
130g unsalted butter
100g coconut oil
80g stevia
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
700g porridge oats
250g high-quality dark chocolate
120g natural crunchy peanut butter

Method

  1. Melt the butter and coconut oil in a pan over a gentle heat. Add the stevia, vanilla extract and oats. Mix thoroughly. Press half the mixture firmly into a 23 cm rectangular baking tin.
  2. Break the chocolate into squares and place in a pan with the peanut butter over a very low heat. Melt it gently, stirring to combine. Pour this mixture over the first oat layer in the tray and spread it out evenly with a knife or spatula.
  3. Top with the remaining oat mixture, press it down and chill in the fridge overnight before cutting into bars.

Good for:

  • High cholesterol and high blood pressure; digestive health

Clever combination:

  • Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta glucan that forms a gel-like texture in the digestive tract, binds cholesterol and carries it out of the body through the bowels. Chocolate can have a temporary lowering effect on blood pressure, making this a great heart-healthy combination.
