These tasty little bites give you masses of nutrients in one small mouthful: they’re packed with B vitamins, essential fatty acids, minerals and all manner of other goodies. They also stimulate the senses.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
200g pitted dates
50g goji berries
250g raw mixed nuts
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon chilli powder

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients in a food processor and process on the highest setting to produce a smooth, dough-like texture. Roll into small balls, about 2–3 cm in diameter, and refrigerate for 1–2 hours. Store in the fridge in an airtight container.

Good for:

  • Skin health, heart health, constipation

Clever combination:

  • This is a great dish for enhancing circulation, thanks to the double whammy of cocoa and chilli. Cocoa contains a group of compounds called flavonoids, which get absorbed by the cells that make up the inner lining (endothelium) of the blood vessels. When these cells take in cocoa flavonoids they start secreting nitric oxide, which relaxes the vessel walls. This helps to enhance circulation and also to temporarily reduce blood pressure. Chilli contains a compound called capsaicin which has a similar effect, and also encourages the release of nitric oxide by endothelial cells.
