This slightly adjusted version of the summer classic, sangria, is great for parties, and when made like this can also be a great source of some very potent, healthful compounds. We need to have fun in life, and with a bit of creativity we can tick two boxes at once: enjoying ourselves and being good to our bodies.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
300ml red wine
200ml blood orange juice
100ml pomegranate juice
1 large orange, sliced
ice cubes
fresh mint, to serve (optional)

Method

  1. Mix the wine and juices together in a large jug, add the sliced orange and chill in the fridge before adding the ice and serving. Add some fresh mint leaves just before serving, if you like.

Good for:

  • Cardiovascular health

Star ingredient:

  • Red wine has long been linked with cardiovascular health benefits. One of the key compounds involved is resveratrol, which helps give wine its colour. This increases the production of nitric oxide by blood vessels, causing them to relax, and reduces the pressure within them. Resveratrol is also thought to reduce oxidation of bad (LDL) cholesterol and excessive clotting.
