If you can say that one backwards I’ll give you a fiver! This is a fabulous morning smoothie that will blow away the morning cobwebs with the subtlety of napalm. And you get your morning coffee. Get in! Coffee probably isn’t the first thing you’d expect to see in this book, but its bad reputation is unjust. There are in fact many research papers supporting its health benefits – just leave out the sugar and cream.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 ripe banana
250ml oat milk
1 heaped tablespoon raw cacao powder
1 teaspoon honey or agave nectar
1 shot espresso, cooled
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
1/2 red chilli, chopped, (optional)

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients in a jug blender and whizz up into a thick, luscious smoothie. Serve immediately, with ice and some chopped chilli on top, if you like.

Good for:

  • Cognitive function, vascular health, energy boosting

Star ingredient:

  • Cocoa is bursting with a group of compounds called flavonoids that have been shown to dilate blood vessels. They do this by stimulating the secretion of a substance called nitric oxide that relaxes the muscular walls of the vessels. Recent university studies showed that cocoa flavonoids can enhance cognitive function by improving blood flow to the brain. They may also provide a mild, temporary reduction in blood pressure.
