Matcha (powdered Japanese green tea) can be pricey, but it’s becoming more popular in health food shops these days, and many people have asked me for interesting ways to use it. Plus, its health benefits are staggering and the flavour is divine. So here’s one of my all-time favourite ways of using it, which brings back fond memories of summer in Japan.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
250ml oat or hemp milk
1 ripe banana
3 teaspoons matcha powder
2 teaspoons runny honey
5 ice cubes

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend into a thick smoothie. Serve immediately, with more ice if you like.

Good for:

  • High cholesterol, anti-inflammatory effects in many systems

Star ingredient:

  • It has to be the matcha really, doesn’t it? Green tea contains some very powerful phytochemical compounds, the most widely studied of which is called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG for short. It has very high antioxidant activity, and regular consumption has shown benefits for high cholesterol and protection against atherosclerosis (thickening of the arteries). It also delivers some anti-inflammatory activity.
