Smoothies don’t have to be all about berries: pears are a classic English ingredient and have some fabulous health benefits too. This is ultra-refreshing and can fill you up for a good few hours.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
2 ripe pears
1 ripe banana
100ml apple juice

Method

  1. Cut the pears into quarters and place in a blender with the banana and apple juice. Blend into a thick smoothie. Serve immediately, with ice if you like.

Good for:

  • Blood sugar management, high cholesterol, constipation

Star ingredient:

  • Pears may not seem very exciting, but they actually have some fabulous health benefits and are a potential part of the armoury in blood sugar management issues. They’re rich sources of several compounds, including isorhamnetin and flavan-3-ols, that can help with insulin sensitivity. Plus, their high fibre content will slow down the release of energy from food, creating a drip-feed effect on blood sugar. The fibre can also help bind to cholesterol in the digestive tract and carry it away through the bowels before it is absorbed.
