Like burgers, hot dogs are one of the best ‘things in bread’ to devour. They can easily be eaten with one hand, and you can put whatever you like on them. The most important part is the sausage – traditionally a smoked thin pork or beef emulsified sausage originating from Frankfurt in Germany. They became very popular in the United States around the end of the nineteenth century, and are now synonymous with baseball! The frankfurts are usually either steamed or grilled, and the bun is often steamed to make it very soft. The classic version below features the most commonly used condiments; choose whichever ones you like, in quantities to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
4 quality smoked frankfurters
4 hot dog buns

Other bits

Quantity Ingredient
Tomato ketchup
Spicy mustard
cheese, grated
Pickles
onion, finely diced
Basic mayo
jalapeno chillies
sauerkraut

Method

  1. Heat the frankfurters in a steamer, or in a frying pan over a medium heat with a little vegetable oil.
  2. Heat the buns in a steamer until soft.
  3. Open the buns and add the frankfurters. Top with whichever condiments take your fancy…

Build from the bottom, in this order:

  • Bun → Frankfurter → Other bits!
