Being a doctor who practised what he preached, Abuelo wasn‘t a huge fan of sugary sweets. However, he would always indulge us. Without fail my sister, cousins and I would be tantalised by the colours and smells of the sweet stalls found on most street corners. Even when people were waiting in traffic, sweet vendors would peddle their goodies to the idling cars. Abuelo always saw purchasing these sweets as an important way to support the poor families living nearby.

Some vendors carried enormous baskets with an array of baked goods; others had long poles on which sugar-coated apples were displayed. Other vendors carried platters with nut-covered fudges, coconut rounds, various nut brittles and many more delights.
