In 1936 my Abuelo moved to Mexico City to finish his education and follow his calling to become a doctor.

Until his arrival in Mexico City, Abuelo had only known the food of the coastal town of Alvarado, which was mostly seafood. It was a welcome new experience to sample the array of offerings that were to be found on almost every street corner in Mexico City.

Although he worked very hard to put himself through school, Abuelo‘s salary still barely stretched to feed himself. This is where street food literally became a lifesaver. Cheap but nutritious and freshly made, Abuelo made it his everyday sustenance.
