One of Abuelo‘s favourite discoveries in the big capital was the panaderías (bakeries). He just loved the pan dulce (sweet bread) sold at these establishments to accompany the tall glass of cold milk he would drink for his merienda (snack) after attending night school.

There is nothing like walking into a Mexican panadería with its delicious smells of buttery, sugary goodies laced with cinnamon, rosewater and vanilla! The range of shapes and textures make you want to eat everything! Abuelo must have been impressed. He soon developed a taste for the delicious French-influenced pastries, which continued to be a favourite until the end of his life.
