‘I’ll be back soon!’ David says as he disappears into the kitchen. Both the kids are already tucked up in bed. I can hear some chopping going on, the door to the freezer quietly opening and closing, then, of course, the SLAM of a knife hitting the floor (he always drops something when he tries to be quiet!) – silence . . . they are still sleeping . . . a slight whizz from the food processor on minimum speed. A minute later, the sound of dark chocolate being grated and then he shows up with tonight’s treat – a strawberry nice cream smoothie topped with fruit, nut butter and lots of dark chocolate!

I’m not sure when it started, but we have become hooked on this evening ritual of making small improvised desserts that we eat while watching TV, reading a book, writing a blog post or answering emails. Sometimes the dessert can simply be stuffed dates or apple slices dipped in nut butter, but most commonly we do various sorts of sweeter smoothies. I love the Triple Chocolate Mint Bowl, and when apples are in season, David never misses a chance to make his Apple Pie in a Glass. Even if we have given the smoothies in this chapter a dessert label, you can go right ahead and make them for breakfast if you prefer. We are not going to tell anyone.
