One weekend every month, my dad invites us to brunch. It’s his social meal of choice and one he takes seriously. There are at least three varieties of sourdough bread on the table (two sorts of rye and one with apricots studded into it), along with butter, jams and cheeses, no-flour banana pancakes – ‘It’s your recipe,’ he proudly adds, every time – a large bowl of fruit salad, cappuccino and freshly squeezed orange juice. At times, there is even a pink birthday cake there, ‘To celebrate that we are all gathered here!’ And always, without exception, there is a large jug of his home-made smoothie on the table. He is not the most adventurous smoothie maker, but has found a few good ingredient combinations that he rotates to create a pink, purple or blue fruit smoothie.

We love Dad’s smoothies, but we created this chapter with him in mind. ‘Would Dad make this?’ meant was it simple enough for him to try, although perhaps a little new and more daring in flavour. We have added spices or nut butter to a few of these smoothies and vegetables to some, but apart from that, they are quick, easy and pretty straightforward. All ingredients can be found in normal supermarkets and the recipes are simply mixed in a blender and poured into a glass.

So, while we hope that you will also try some of the more intriguing smoothies in this book, these recipes are all great as a starting point.
