We couldn’t write this book without including a milkshake. It wouldn’t feel right. This chocolate version is made with coconut milk, which gives it a rich and creamy texture. We love making layered milkshakes and smoothies. They look prettier and make the drinking experience more interesting as the separate flavours slowly combine when you work your way down the shake. Blackberries and chocolate are perfect together, but raspberries would be really good as well.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
15 fresh blackberries
250ml coconut milk
120ml almond milk or milk of your choice
3 tablespoons cacao powder
1 tablespoon cacao nibs, optional
1 tablespoon Homemade nut and seed butter
2 frozen bananas
or 2 fresh bananas and 2 ice cubes

Method

  1. Divide the blackberries between two glasses. Muddle them (mash them gently) in the bottom of the glasses. You can use a pestle or end of a rolling pin to do this. Put the rest of the ingredients in a blender and run on high-speed until frothy. Pour carefully into the glasses, make sure the blackberries stay on the bottom, and serve immediately.

Tip

  • We often peel and slice ripe, leftover bananas and store them in a container in the freezer. They are great for making smoothies, and you don’t need to add any ice.
