On sunny days we often pack some leftovers and a blanket in a basket and walk to a park just down from where we live. Stockholm is nice that way. There are parks, water and green areas in every part of the city. So even though we don’t have a terrace, balcony or garden, we get to eat outside pretty often during the summer months.

We also go on more planned picnics. Elsa gets all giddy whenever we visit the city farm, which is only a bus ride away. We usually take some wraps or muffins to eat and she gives an apple to the horses. And we sometimes take a small ferry to Rosendals Trädgård, a lovely garden where you can eat a picnic under the blossoming apple trees in spring. When Elsa was three months old, we arranged a picnic there so all our relatives and friends could come and meet her. Everybody brought food, which we shared together under a large oak tree.

In this chapter we have listed some recipes that can survive a few hours in a picnic basket without looking sad. For example, our picnic bread roll, with vegetables hidden inside, a delicious cold potato salad and small fennel and coconut tarts. All these dishes would also be great to take to a gathering during the winter.
