Whenever you walk into a boteco (bar) in Brasil, you’ll find yourself presented with a list of salgadinhos – literally ‘little salty things’ – to nibble alongside your beer or cocktail. Some places, such as Aconchego Carioca in downtown Rio, do a variety of different things very well, while others pride themselves on their skill at one snack: Bar do Adão in Leblon has a list of more than 30 pastels (pastries), each with a different mouthwatering filling. They’re best enjoyed with plenty of friends and a cold drink, but also make a perfect starter for a barbecue or dinner party. Make a few different ones, put them in the middle of the table and see how long it takes for the plates to empty!
