The most loved toasted sandwich, eaten by millions at any time of the day. If you can get your hands on a really good quality cooked ham and use your favourite vintage Cheddar, then it is hard to go wrong here.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
2 medium slices white bloomer
1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature
25-50g sliced ham
60g grated vintage cheddar
or 30g grated vintage cheddar
or 30g grated gruyere

Method

  1. Spread one side of each slice of bread with the butter. Turn the bread over so it is butter-side down. Top one slice with the ham, then the cheese, then cover with the other slice so that the buttered sides of the bread are on the outside of the sandwich.
  2. Heat up a frying pan (skillet) over a medium heat and place the sandwich in the pan. Fry for 3 minutes until golden brown. Flip the sandwich over and cook for a further 3 minutes or until crispy and golden on the outside and the cheese has melted inside. Alternatively, cook the sandwich in a toasted sandwich maker or panini press.

best bread:

  • white bloomer
