For most of us, breakfast is the first meal of the day. It needs to be simple to prepare, as we are often in a hurry or not in the mood for much in the way of cooking. At the same time, it is a very important meal. Breakfast has to nourish our bodies and provide us with enough energy to last until lunch time – or at least until a mid-morning snack.

Cereals make a great breakfast choice, as they are low in sugar, salt and fat, and are a good source of fibre and energy. Fresh fruit is also excellent, and the occasional low-fat egg dish can be very satisfying.

Don’t feel that you have to stick to traditional breakfast options; there are plenty of other great ideas to try. Why not go for low-fat sandwiches, rice dishes, baked beans on toast, leftover soup – or indeed any leftovers – for a change? The choice is yours, and as long as you opt for a dish that’s low in fat and added sugar, you’ll feel full and satisfied. It’s so much better than eating no breakfast at all.
