Noodles, pasta and rice are all popular foods, especially with the young. They are convenient, filling and relatively easy to prepare. When teenagers start cooking for themselves, these are the dishes they tend to learn first. But do remember that they are essentially carbohydrate, and you’ll need to include a fair amount of vegetables or protein, such as tofu, meat or fish, to turn them into a complete meal. Pre-packaged instant noodles and ‘quick cook’ pasta or rice dishes that come with a sachet of seasoning are best consumed only occasionally, as they have limited nutritional value.

Rice, especially basmati or brown rice, is a more nourishing grain food than pasta and noodles, which are mostly made from processed flour, water and sometimes eggs.

Always read the labels of commercially made pasta sauces carefully. Some are excellent, containing lots of tomatoes and other vegetables, but others have a worrying amount of added sugar, fat, salt and other additives.

Finally, I urge you all to learn to make the beautiful, home-made tomato sauce in this section.
