Give a child a poor diet and it’s simply more of the same they crave. Give them mainly home-cooked meals, served with lots of veg followed by fruit-based puddings and that is what they will crave. It doesn’t have to be difficult and no one need be smug. There are still lots of foods my kids don’t like, but for me the emphasis is that they try new things. Food isn’t frightening.

In a perfect world we’d eat as a family every night, but for us, that just isn’t possible. My husband works beyond the boys’ dinnertime so we save eating as a family for the weekend. Weekdays are all about finding delicious solutions for teatime that don’t leave me seeking out tonic water before 7pm. These are designed for small people, but they’re not half bad for bigger people too.

Purées versus baby led…

I don’t want to enter the whole weaning versus purée debate. I did a combination of purées in ever increasingly lumpy textures and handheld bits and bobs, which helped each of my sons learn to feed themselves. It worked for us, but really, anything goes. You choose, the recipes here can be blended up or served as they are.

The whatever you're eating without salt purée

When I was weaning my first son I used to make batches of food just for him, often dedicating whole Sundays to the task. No such schoolgirl error with my second-born. I invested in baby stock cubes and made all the family food low or no salt, then whizzed it into increasingly larger pieces as he got older. Anything he liked I’d make a larger portion of and freeze in ice cube trays for quick meals. Easy, cheap, nourishing – what’s not to like?
