An Indian restaurant chain recently opened a new place in Leicester. The opening caused quite a stir. Nothing to do with the delicious spiced meat and vegetable dishes. It was the chocolate fountain that did it, with platters of fruit and marshmallows to freely dip. There is something very enticing about dipping anything into chocolate. This is how meals often end in our house – a little very dark chocolate stirred up into a sauce, for as much as most children are started off on milkier varieties, I think it’s useful to get their tastebuds into the good stuff early. It’s also higher in iron.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
20g good-quality dark chocolate
10ml whole milk
1 teaspoon butter
sugar sprinkles
mini marshmallows
fruit of your child’s choice

Method

  1. Chop or grate the chocolate until fine and place it in a microwaveable bowl with the milk. Heat on high for 30 seconds then give it a little whisk. If it needs longer to melt, pop it back into the microwave on 10 second bursts, but no longer. When molten hot and completely liquid, whisk in the butter.
  2. Serve the sauce in a little pot (like a clean pudding or yoghurt pot) for dipping, with a bowl of sprinkles, a bowl of mini marshmallows and a platter of your child’s favourite fruit. Beware – do check the heat of the chocolate sauce before serving to very small children.
