There is a point in life we all reach where stuff becomes less important. I realised I’d reached this landmark when my mother asked what I wanted for Christmas a few years ago. I had nothing to suggest. She insisted, as mums do, and so I asked for some new socks and T-shirts. Not exactly the thrilling gifts of my teens.

It was at about this point that I started to look at my own birthday and Christmas offerings to people a little more closely. Buying a toiletry giftset for Daddy from the boys felt pointless; the shower gel quickly forgotten, the novelty sponge falling to bits and binned by March. But a jar of gingerbread biscotti to be dipped into Christmas morning coffee leaves a memory for life. I’d rather bestow memories on people I love and care for than over packaged, easily forgotten, recycling fodder.

All the ideas in this chapter can happily be made a day or more ahead, and are usually met with a grin and a thank you. That’s not to say the recipes from other chapters aren’t welcome gifts. My pal Annie hand delivered a pie from 100 miles away after the birth of my first son. I can’t think of anything I wanted more than dinner dealt with deliciously. Well, apart from a little sleep maybe.
