Being an only child meant I was obsessed with large families. I loved the idea of their natural camaraderie and sitting shoulder to shoulder at the dinner table. Of course the queueing for the bathroom, squabbling over toys, complete lack of privacy and the incessant din that goes with having a large brood was lost on me. All I saw was the communal eating of heavily laden platters and, being a greedy child, I was sold. I planned a large family and an even larger table.

It turns out I have neither the pain threshold nor the wallet for a very large family, but I was right about enjoying huge family gatherings. I’m never happier than when the grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends descend. Feeding a crowd of varying age can be the most difficult brief, for no one really wants to make different meals do they? What’s needed are one-size-fits-all recipes that will keep everyone happy.

As much as I love preparing food for people I love, I want to enjoy it too. No one likes a martyr, in fact there’s nothing that’ll put folks off their food more than the chef sweating in the kitchen, refraining from joining in. The secret to any good gathering is, I think, to care lots and lots about the event right up until the moment the doorbell rings and then to simply set about, as the host, having the best time possible. You set the fun-o-meter, so don’t be a stick in the kitchen.
