Who knew there was such a palaver about oats? Porridge purists will scoff at my use of ‘instant’ porridge that you cook in the microwave for breakfast. But here’s the news: these oats basically have the same nutritional value as your ‘I-got-up-at-5 am-and-now-I’m-in-front-of-a-stove-stirring-a-pot-for-hours’ oats. If you have the time to do that, then go right ahead. But for the rest of us, here’s the fast track.

No, you cannot add honey.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1/2 cup instant oats
1/2 cup blueberries
1/2 cup skim or low-fat milk

Method

  1. Cook the porridge in a microwave-safe container according to the instructions on the box. When there is 1 minute of cooking time to go, add the blueberries. Cook for the final minute then remove from the microwave and leave to sit for 1 minute. Stir in the cold milk and enjoy. But be careful – the blueberries are hot!
