When I first found out I was a coeliac sufferer, I was devastated. I could no longer eat Vegemite, a savoury yeast spread that’s a national obsession here in Australia. I tried alternatives from the supermarket and they were well, gross, both in taste and ingredients. This ‘mite’ is unlike any of the alternatives; it’s totally Vegemitey, packed with protein from the black tahini and still has those B vitamins I love in Vegemite. These come from the nutritional yeast. This spread is a life saver for Vegemite lovers everywhere, who can’t eat the original thing!

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
135g black tahini
80g tamari
20g nutritional yeast flakes
1/2 teaspoon raw honey
2 teaspoons coconut cream

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir until combined.
  2. Place in a sterilised jar and keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Spread on toast, crackers or whatever you please!
