Despite their distinct greenness, I know children who will happily snack on these traditional Japanese soy beans in their pods, even if they’re not keen on other green vegetables. I’m sure it’s because of the fun of popping them out of their skins.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
500g frozen edamame beans
soy sauce, to serve
or tamari, to serve

Method

  1. Steam or boil the edamame beans until tender. Refresh under cold water and set aside to cool.
  2. Serve as is. For adults, serve with soy sauce or a sprinkle of salt.

Tip

  • Edamame beans have twice the protein, twice the calcium and over five times the folate of green peas, so they’re a great vegetable to include in your weekly shop.

Baby’s serve

  • For a younger baby, prepare edamame yoghurt purée. For an older baby, keep the purée consistency lumpier or serve as is (giving your child a helping hand to shell the beans).

Toddler’s serve

  • Serve as is.
