Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
335g plain flour
1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup buttermilk
90g butter, melted
1 tablespoon molasses or golden syrup

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Lightly grease a baking tray.
  2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a bowl. Stir in the buttermilk, 60 g of the butter and the molasses or golden syrup to form a soft dough.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead until just smooth and elastic. Pat into a round loaf about 15 cm in diameter. With a sharp knife, score the loaf to make six wedges, cutting about 1 cm into the dough. Place on the prepared baking tray.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Brush the hot loaf with the remaining melted butter and transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  5. Serve cut into wedges and buttered, with salad or soups.
