Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
300g self-raising flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
60g butter, diced
2/3-3/4 cup buttermilk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 230°C.
  2. Sift all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Add enough buttermilk to make a fairly soft dough.
  3. Turn out onto a floured surface. Knead lightly, then pat or roll the dough out until about 2 cm thick. Cut into 5 cm rounds with a floured cutter. Place on ungreased baking trays and bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden.
