These economical meatballs are marvellous for a party. They freeze well, so can be made and stored for 3–4 weeks and reheated as required.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
2 large potatoes, diced
1 granny smith apple, cored and diced
2 large onions, finely chopped
2 rashers bacon, rind removed, finely chopped
2 eggs, beaten
1kg minced steak
500g minced sausage meat
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon ground ginger
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
plain flour
oil, for frying

Spicy tomato sauce

Quantity Ingredient
250ml tomato sauce
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon soy sauce

Method

  1. Place potatoes, apple and onions in a saucepan and just cover with water. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer until very tender. Drain, and mash or pureé. Allow to cool.
  2. Place all ingredients except flour and oil in a bowl and mix well together. Using floured hands, roll into bite-size balls.
  3. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry meatballs until golden on all sides. Drain on paper towels and serve hot or cold. The meatballs can also be baked in a preheated moderately hot oven for 15–20 minutes or until golden-brown.
  4. For sauce, heat all ingredients together in a saucepan, stirring occasionally. To serve, pour sauce into a bowl on a platter and arrange meatballs around it. Provide a container of toothpicks so guests can spear the meatballs for dunking.
