Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
300g self-raising flour
125g butter
115g caster sugar
1 orange, zested
1 egg, beaten
125ml milk
125ml water
160g dates, chopped
95g glace orange peel, chopped

Method

  1. Sift flour into a bowl and rub in butter. Stir in sugar and orange zest. Add egg, milk and water and beat well.
  2. Stir in dates and glacé peel and turn into a greased and base-lined 18 × 10 cm loaf tin. Bake in a preheated moderate oven for 1¼ hours. Serve sliced and buttered.
