MR: This makes a lovely warm (not hot) chocolate and chills well to make a good chocolate milk too. As I get older I never want to stop hearing Finn’s and Jay’s voices in my head as they are right now asking, ‘Can we go to Pope Joan for a hot chocolate that’s just warm through, Dad?’, in a quiet whisper so that Mum can’t hear.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
250ml milk
100ml cream
1 1/2 tablespoons water
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoons vanilla paste (optional)
60g good-quality dark chocolate, roughly chopped

Method

  1. Bring the milk and cream to a simmer in a saucepan over a medium heat.

Mix the water and cocoa powder together in small bowl to form a paste, then whisk this into the milk mixture together with the remaining ingredients. Stir everything together until the chocolate has melted, then pass through a fine sieve and divide between mugs.
