MRS: The golden rule for dinner is be prepared, as there is nothing worse than finding it’s 5 pm and you haven’t worked out what’s on the menu. In a perfect world I do a weekly meal plan on a Sunday, checking what’s in the garden, freezer and cupboard that needs to be used first.

Of course, we have our core repertoire of recipes we cook a lot that make up the basis of our weekly dinners, but we also like to mix it up by trying out new recipes too. We have an extraordinary number of cookbooks between us and found that we rarely cooked from them so we instigated a little plan a few years ago that I pick a book and then Matt picks a recipe from that book for me to cook and vice versa. It works really well and has widened our home repertoire as a result.

This chapter is a snapshot of a random weekly menu, complete with easy dishes and some that take a bit more prep. Some days I may do most of the cooking in the morning and then simply heat the dish up later because we have a er-school activities on and don’t get home until late. Whatever the day though, we always have dinner spot-on at 6 pm, which is when Matt gets home from Pope Joan. We all sit at the table together to talk about our day and the things that made us happy. It’s a great way to connect and engage with each other and we hope it fosters in the boys a real appreciation for meal times.
