Like a swift delicious punch to the face by a Mexican fighter, the luchador. It’s simple, really: basil, lemon and gin. No need for anything more.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
handful basil leaves, plus extra, for garnish (optional)
1/2 lemon, juiced
60ml gin
20ml simple syrup
ice

220g sugar

Method

  1. To make the simple syrup, place the sugar and 250 ml water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool, then pour into a glass bottle.
  2. Muddle the basil and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Add the gin and syrup, then fill with ice and shake. Double strain over ice into a rocks glass.
  3. Garnish with a basil leaf, if desired.
