These delicious little sweets come from the Greek port city of Volos, and they couldn’t be easier to make, as they are just ground walnuts mixed with grated chocolate, honey and a little rum or fortified wine such as Mavrodafni or Marsala. Traditionally they are prepared for Passover, weddings and other special occasions, but they are perfect with a cup of Greek coffee at any time of day.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
250g freshly shelled walnuts, finely ground in a blender or food processor
4 tablespoons finely grated dark chocolate
3 tablespoons honey, to taste
2-3 tablespoons rum or marsala
cocoa, for rolling (optional)

Method

  1. Place the walnuts, chocolate and sugar in a bowl and mix well. Add enough brandy to make a smooth, thick paste. Roll into balls about 2cm in diameter, then roll in cocoa if desired. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to 3 weeks.
