Most Indians are partial to the crunch of raw red onions in a salad. It adds taste and texture when eaten with curries, kababs or snacks. Other members of the allium family including shallots, red onions or even leeks and spring onions can be used for variations in texture and flavour. The raw taste of the onion is mitigated by combining it with the acidity of different vinegars or lemon or lime juice.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
2 large red onions, sliced
1 lime, juiced
pinch Chaat masala
1 tablespoon mint leaves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon coriander leaves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon red or green chilli, finely chopped
1/2-1 teaspoon salt, or to taste

Method

  1. Toss together the onion, lime juice, chaat masala, mint, coriander, chilli and salt in a serving bowl.
  2. Leave at room temperature for 20 minutes to allow the flavours to combine a little, then serve.
