These tasty treats make great party food! If you prefer, you can cut them in half to create 24 small twists.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
1 tablespoon plain flour
2 x 24 cm squares ready-made puff pastry, thawed
60ml tomato sauce
100g cheddar cheese, grated

Method

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 190º C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and dust your chopping board with the flour.
  2. Gently pull the plastic backing sheet off one pastry square and place it on the chopping board. Pour the tomato sauce into the centre of this pastry square. Using a small bowl scraper, evenly spread the sauce over the pastry. Top with an even sprinkling of the cheese.
  3. Carefully place the other pastry square on top so the whole thing resembles a cheese and sauce sandwich. Using clean hands, gently but firmly press down all over the pastry to seal the two squares together. Gently pull the plastic backing sheet off the second pastry square.
  4. With adult help: Using a sharp knife, slice the pastry from top to bottom to make roughly twelve 2 cm wide strips. You can use a ruler for this step, if you like.
  5. With adult help: Hold one end of a pastry strip and ask an adult to hold the other end. Turn the pastry in opposite directions until the pastry is completely twisted, taking care that no filling falls out. Place the twist on the baking tray and repeat until all the strips are twisted. Remove any loose bits of cheese from the tray before you place it in the oven.
  6. With adult help: Wearing oven mitts, place the baking tray in the oven and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden. Once more wearing oven mitts, remove the cooked twists from the oven and cool for 3 minutes.
  7. Using a spatula, transfer the cheese twists to a serving platter. These are best eaten warm!

Time-saving tips

  • Have all your equipment and ingredients ready. Find a kitchen hand to help you prepare the ingredients ahead of time. Pre-heat your oven to 190ºC at least 20 minutes before cooking.
