This is an easy way to cook rice that will guarantee delicious results – light and fluffy grains that are perfectly cooked every time. Rice is one of those versatile and cheap ingredients, like pasta, which can be kept in your store cupboard and will always come in handy as an accompaniment. Yet it can also be a delicious meal in its own right, with just a few extra bits thrown in. I most often use basmati rice whenever I’m cooking rice. In Hindi it means ‘Queen of fragrance’ and is delicious with curries. I also adore it just with some butter and coriander. Long grain rice is cooked and prepared in the same way.

Ingredients

Quantity Ingredient
75g basmati rice
or 75g long grain rice

Method

  1. Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add a pinch of salt.
  2. Add the rice and stir well so it doesn’t stick.
  3. Cook for 10–12 minutes until soft. Test a few grains to check.
  4. Drain and serve immediately.
