I’m a huge fan of whisky. In fact, it’s been my spirit of choice since I was just a teen. Being a woman and a relatively young one at that, you’d probably be surprised by this admission. And that’s the fault of stories typically told about the drink – of fireplaces, cigars and a certain profile of person who would be expected to enjoy a fine dram. The popular television series ‘Mad Men’ has a bit to do with it, too.
But times are changing and a varied group of people has developed a taste for this dark spirit. Why? Well, because it’s super-tasty for one. It also has to do with the growth of the boutique bar scene (with a penchant for classic cocktails), the arrival of the ‘mixologist’ championing all manner of premium spirits, and the promotion of products through prestigious events such as the World Whiskies Awards. And also, the popular television series Mad Men…
Whisky or whiskey, from Scotland, Ireland, America or Japan (or Australia, our obvious preference), there’s a lot to love about this age-old drink. It also happens to be an ideal winter warmer, and it goes great with the rich, warmly spiced dishes we crave when the weather turns cold. To get you started, we’ve put together a three-course menu matched to two straight-up styles of whisky and one whisky-based cocktail. Start your swilling here.

Whisky match: the delicate flavour of smoked salmon, along with soft cheese and sharp capers, will work best with a light, sweet style of whisky. Try the Trapper's Hut Single Cask Malt Whisky

Whisky match: the mix of sweet and spicy in this barbecue dish requires a full-bodied whisky to stand up to its bold flavours. Try the Sullivans Cove Double Cask Whisky
Sweet potato and maple pie

Whisky match: mix-up an old fashioned cocktail to go with this indulgent American-style pie. The ginger, brown sugar and maple flavours will complement a fragrant style of whisky, and the orange peel in the cocktail will make for a refreshing contrast. Try the Overeem Port Cask Matured Whisky as your base.
