From the award-winning UK cooking school and restaurant River Cottage, which is also the setting of the TV series, much-loved chef Gill Meller brings us his debut cookbook Gather, featuring 119 recipes from the land in which he lives and works.
Released to much fanfare, Gather has already received plenty of accolades, including a nod from Nigella Lawson who says, "This is an exquisite book that I cannot stop reading; every recipe makes me consider ingredients and flavours afresh."
"As people, we gather in one way or another all the time. It's what we do," Gill says. I'd like to agree. Whether it's your groceries from the supermarket, your friends for a few drinks, or even just your phone, wallet and keys in the morning, you're a gatherer. I'm a gatherer. We gather together.
This last part about togetherness is especially important to Gill. Food is an experience best shared. It's also egalitarian. "The reality is, we all have to eat," he says.
Maybe you're not going to go foraging for food in the wild, but you could saute some in-season mushrooms to pile on to toast or bake a cake with Tasmanian honey for afternoon tea?
This is feel-good food, and it's not hard. Gather. Create. Do it your own way.
