The duo behind Smith & Daughters share how they'll be spending Christmas this year.

Shannon Martinez

How will you be celebrating Christmas this year?

With my family in Castlemaine, Victoria.

What typically features on your Christmas menu?

We start the day with Christmas ham on toast, which is always carved by my stepdad. Lunch always features a roast and vegetables. We're super traditional on Christmas Day. Back in the day, Christmas Eve used to be celebrated with the Spanish side of the family, which is dad's side, and then it’d be the traditional Australian Christmas Day with my mum’s side. We'll have plum pudding, as always, which Nan puts gold coins into each and every year.

Will you be trying any new dishes?

Boxing Day is when I typically come up with new dishes. Usually we spend it outside drinking in the sun with cheese platters, and I’ll just whip up whatever random dishes on the day. This year, because it's been so massively hectic, I’ll be getting heaps of fun stuff from Meatsmith – I’ll just let them do the work and play around with that. This year, I will chill.

Any drinks you’ll reach for on the day?

Definitely sangria.

Try: Monte cristo
Chocolate and hazelnut Christmas pudding
Sangria crumble

How will you be celebrating Christmas this year?

Fingers crossed, I’ll be doing as little as possible. It's been a massive year and we've literally been nonstop with exciting plans and projects, so for Christmas I reckon a little bit of nothing would be welcome. But if I'm being honest with myself that probably won't happen, and I am looking forward to spending the day with my husband Callum and my in-laws here in Melbourne. No overseas travels this year – every other year I travel to the States and last year we had our wedding there, but this year it will be nice and quiet. Yes please.

What typically features on your Christmas menu?

A veggie roast made by my talented mother-in-law, Marilyn. She's mastered her cashew-based roast and even my meat-eating father-in-law requests it throughout the year. It's very special. Roast vegetables, gravy, salads, and heaps of delicious vegan desserts from Smith & Deli will feature, including plum pudding, mince pies, panforte, gingerbread and croissants. I’ll probably also whip up a batch of white truffle forest mushroom pâté, as it's my absolute favourite.

Will you be trying any new dishes?

For me, cooking is a very unusual thing – Shannon usually does all the cooking. But I will definitely be cooking from our cookbook, and trying my hand at Shannon's dishes for my family. Definitely the pâté!

Any drinks you’ll reach for on the day?

I’ll most likely defer to a large punchbowl of our summery pink lemonade.

Try: Nut roast
Seasonal tomato & quinoa salad
Chocolate pâté
