Don’t let the name put you off – these burgers might be messy to eat, but they’re very tasty! Satisfy your craving for fast food with this healthier, homemade option: enjoy with a side of coleslaw and fries.


Quantity Ingredient
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 large garlic clove, finely grated or crushed
200g very lean minced beef
2 tablespoons tomato sauce
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon soft brown sugar
2 tablespoons american mustard
2 pinches chilli powder
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 pinch finely ground black pepper
2 round white bread rolls, sliced in half
2 small pickled gherkins, thinly sliced lengthways


  1. Preheat your oven to 180ºC.
  2. With adult help: Heat the olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring regularly, until golden, about 2–3 minutes. Add the beef mince and fry until it is just cooked, roughly 1–2 minutes. Keep stirring to prevent sticking. Add the tomato sauce, vinegar, sugar, mustard, chilli, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring well, for about 2 minutes.
  3. With adult help: Wearing oven mitts, place the bread rolls, cut-side down, on a baking tray in the middle shelf of the oven. Heat for 3 minutes, then remove, once more wearing oven mitts.
  4. Evenly spoon the beef mince into the bread rolls. Top with the pickled gherkin slices and the bread ‘lids’. Serve immediately.

Time-saving tips

  • Have all your equipment and ingredients ready. Find a kitchen hand to help you prepare the ingredients ahead of time.

    Pre-heat your oven to 180ºC at least 20 minutes before cooking. Have an oven tray positioned in the middle shelf of the oven.
