Gourmands, get excited – and circle April 2017 on your calendar.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants is the food world’s equivalent of the Academy Awards. It’s what everyone refers to when discussing restaurant ratings and the event draws on the who’s who of culinary juggernauts. Now, the 50 Best is coming down under.

The news that Melbourne would host the 2017 ceremony broke in June this year and was a major gastronomic coup for the city. Next year’s event will mark only the second time the awards have been held outside of London.

Official dates have been released for the awards and the details are sure to have food lovers jumping for joy. The event will take place on Wednesday April 5 at Carlton’s Royal Exhibition Building and it's set to be one mighty fine shindig. But that’s not all...

In one of the best pairings this side of pulled pork and brioche buns, the 50 Best will coincide with the 25th Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. To celebrate the alignment of dates, the festival is giving die-hard gourmets the opportunity of a culinary lifetime, thanks to a series of masterclasses taking place on April 1 and 2. Leading the charge will be eight internationally awarded chefs from the 50 Best restaurants, with students given the chance to watch, learn and taste. We know – we’re excited too.

The festival’s full program runs from April 1 to 7 and the line up of chefs for the masterclasses will be announced November 25. Watch this space.
